The Bridesmaids' Dress - a touchy subject
To match or not to match, that is the question.
Although you and I both know there are many more questions than that, and for the bride, the main question is, how much leeway does she offer her maids to begin with?
Chances are, if you have been a bridesmaid, your personal expereince will determine the expectations you have of your own maids.
As a photographer who has seen many a dress, I can assure you all, that uniform styles and colours do not necessairly make for better pictures - so pictures are not a factor.
Your bridesmaids will have many duties required of them, and the greatest of these, of course, is the overall amount of money they will spend leading up to your big day. And to be honest, if the year has been a rather, oh shall we say, trying one, a token gift from the bride doesn't really cut the verbal scraps and bitter emails that were exchanged months before.
As a bride, etiquette, and basic common sense dictates that the girls, within certain parameters, should choose the style and price point as a group. That they should also be allowed to choose custom fits according to their body shapes.
Note, this is where pictures are important - remember, the lens does nto lie! An uncomfortable girl in a dress not made for her makes for awkward pictures!
How does the bride accomodate everyone's needs then?
1. Different styles and even designers should be ok - just make sure the dresses are not so different from each other that the overall look (or even event theme - garden, cocktail etc.) does not make sense.
2. The fabric should be similar.
3. It is ok for neck lines may vary.
4. And, as mentioned above, body shapes differ.
All in all, with enough notice, the honoured bridesmaid should expect to spend to between $50 and $200 for the dress alone - but keep in mind, makeup, hair, jewelery, pantyhose, shoes, bachelorette parties, bridal shower parties, gas, kenneling the dog, travel expenses, and purchasing the couple's present adds up.
In the end, just like the weather on your wedding day - the bridesmaid's dress has no bearing at all on the rest of your relationship with the one wearing it. So choose your battles wisely!
It is the bride's day, it is true, but making imporatant decisions must be balanced with grace, and a genuine sense of holding your maids' best interests at heart!
If I have struck a cord - better yet, if I have not, either way, perhaps you'll take solace in viewing the pictures below!
Remember, some of these may be forgiven due to 'era'. :)

Feature - Wedding (Chocolate) Cake - poem
Clients of ours in 2005 - our first year in business! - were very excited about the wedding cake they has ordered. So excited, that they found this poem, and included it in their program. They mentioned they took one creative liberty by adding the word 'chocolate' at the end. :)
I thought it was incredibly cute, so I asked them to email me a copy. I printed it out, and as I type this, I am looking at a piece of paper that is 5 years old - I have finally found a purpose for it!
At this point I will dare to confess, that, despite making a living in the wedding industry, I really don't get sick of wedding 'stuff'. Like watching wedding related shows.
Like Ace Of Cakes. People who creatively work with food fascinate me. If you haven't seen it, really, you should. I''m not a TV junkie, but I do try and make time for Duff and Mary Alice Thursdays at 10pm. ;)
Enjoy reading the poem, and in the meantime, here are a few pretty chocolate wedding cakes to ogle. :)

A wedding is a party with,
Of course a wedding cake.
But sometimes by the time it comes,
It's hard to stay awake.
People need to talk a lot,
And laugh and joke and kiss,
And cry - why do they cry? - and mention
God and love and bliss.
Two people have decided that,
They'll share one house for life,
And call themselves, instead of friends,
A husband and a wife.
And so we have to get dressed up,
And eat a lot and wait
For hours 'til they finally serve
The great big (chocolate) wedding cake.

WHO:
WHAT:
Flower Girl Dresses, Ring Bearer Outfits, or ordering because you just can't help yourself!
WHERE:
WHERE:
Based out of Omaha, Nebraska
WHY:
WHY:
My (Katie's) experience with this clothing store has been limited, but the two times I have placed an order the pricing, service, and delivery has been amazing.
Here are the details:
ORDER #1. My sister married last year, and not only was I in the wedding party, but each of our daughter's were too. I was desperate to find a suitable junior bridesmaid's dress for my oldest daughter - something that was sweet, age appropriate, and truthfully, unlike any other flower girl/junior bridesmaid dress I had seen. I didn't want her: uncomfortable, self concious, or hiking up her dress all day. Not wanting to trudge the malls with Abby around Kingston, or any other nearby city for that matter, we online shopped together, and it was a lot of fun!
The dress we purchased was beautiful - I believe it was $50+ dollars! We loved it so much we paid the (little pricey - $30, I think) shipping fee. We ordered on a Thursday, and had it the next Tuesday. I am not too sure how this happened, but lucky us!
ORDER #2. JUST TODAY! Very friendly telephone service: for some reason I was not allowed to log into my account today to place an order, so I placed an order the old fashioned way - by telephone. Patty was friendly and helpful! As I was going to place the order online originally, she made sure to include the 20% off promotion.
PROS: great service, happy to help, great quality products, unique dresses for weddings!
CONS: a PayPAL account is necessary, items may not fit, etc. and you might have to return them.
